Part of the Syracuse Symposium

Part of the Syracuse Symposium series.

Jennifer Mercieca (Texas A&M)
Ryan Skinnell (San Jose State University)
Collin Brooke (Syracuse University)

In recent years, it has become fashionable to suggest that democracy in the United States is in danger; in particular, we are plagued by misinformation, conspiracy theories, and an unwillingness to engage those with whom we disagree. Mercieca and Skinnell are experts in political rhetoric who have been charting these changes in our discourse and writing about them for both academic and general audiences.

This event will feature talks from both scholars, with each addressing the question of whether (and if so, how) our democracy, and our discourse, can be repaired, with moderated discussion and audience Q&A. This public event is organized by Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition with support from the Engaged Humanities Network.
