Camera Geologica: An Elemental History of Photography

Time: March 29, 2024, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.

Location: Peter Graham Scholarly Commons, 114 Bird Library

Siobhan Angus (Carleton University)

The departments of Art and Music Histories and Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics welcome Angus for discussion of her book, Camera Geologica: An Elemental History of Photography (Duke University Press, 2024). "It is the interaction of light with metals that makes photography possible," says Angus in the book's introduction. "Camera Geologica shifts the focus from light to metals to consider the histories of labor and environment that underpin the photographic object. An emphasis on mined materials draws into view the connective tissue between geology, raw materials, labor, empire, colonization, and art. Thinking materially alongside representation—considering photographs as both objects and images—yields new insights into the history of photography and environmental change."

The session includes time for Q&A and light refreshments.
