Bearing Witness: Women, War and the Power of Empathy

SophieNeiman-dot-com

Time: Sept. 30, 2025, 5 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Location: Room 432, Newhouse 3 (I3 Center)

Drawing on her 2024 Pulitzer Center project “Women and War and Eastern Congo,” journalist Sophie Neiman (pictured) explores the power of listening to women’s voices, too often ignored, in the midst of violence and upheaval.

Neiman reflects on the importance of empathy in journalism: Why it matters not only in honoring women’s experiences, but also in bridging divides between reporter and subject, and between readers and the realities of war. She will also discuss the personal and physical risks journalists—especially women—take to bring such truths to light.

An award-winning journalist covering conflict and human rights from central Africa, Neiman lives in Kampala, Uganda. She serves as co-chair of the International Press Association of Uganda.
