Deadline: AY25 Humanities Book Manuscript Workshop Program

The College of Arts and Sciences and the Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Affairs, with support from the Syracuse University Humanities Center, invite proposals for Humanities Book Manuscript Workshop grants. For the 2024-25 academic year, workshops will be awarded in two categories: pre-tenure assistant professors and tenured associate professors. Workshops may be held at any time between July 1, 2024 and May 15, 2025.

The opportunity enables pre-tenure assistant professors or tenured associate professors in the humanities division of the College of Arts & Sciences and Maxwell School who are close to completing a book-length manuscript to benefit from a virtual discussion of their project by three senior, external scholars in their field. Read more below on how to prepare for application.

Apply by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.

Awardees will be notified by early January.

Application questions are all short format and include:

  • (one paragraph) Briefly summarize your project.
  • (two paragraphs) Summarize where you are in the writing process at the time of this application. What is your timeline for completion? Where would the manuscript workshop fall in this timeline and why would the workshop be helpful to you at the proposed time
  • Describe your plans for publishing the book manuscript.
  • Please list three external reviewer you would like to invite to participate and alternates, if appropriate. Indicate their name, title, home institutions, and their fields of expertise. No more than three external scholars will be permitted.
  • When do you propose to hold your virtual workshop during the project period? Workshops may be held at any time between July 1, 2024 and May 15, 2025.
  • Optional: Please describe the personal and professional conditions under which you are producing your work. This is your opportunity to let the committee know of any personal and professional obstacles or challenges you face.

Note that a completed manuscript is NOT required. Manuscripts-in-progress are competitive for this program, designed to generate critical feedback for the author while they develop the manuscript.
