Exploration of Shilpanatanam with Maya Kulkarni
Time: Nov. 8, 2023, 10:30 a.m. - noon
Location: SU Art Museum
The departments of Nutrition and Food Studies(Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics) and Art and Music Histories (A&S) invite Dr. Chadda, an acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer, dance researcher, and choreographer, to engage with the Syracuse community in a public performance (Nov. 7) and this workshop opportunity.
A classical Indian dance tradition, Bharatanatyam emerged in Hindu temples alongside ancient and medieval sculpture. More recently, this 2000-year-old dance form has triggered discussion about the role of caste in its evolution. Chadda’s workshop dialogue incorporates relevant objects from the SU Art Museum’s collections to engage with the aesthetic links between dance, religion, art, and architecture; the modernizing of a traditional dance form in post-Independence India; and the recent re-evaluation of caste politics in its historical trajectory.
Space is limited! Please RSVP here.
