All Things Sacred: Art, Heritage, and Knowledge Across the North

Time: April 16, 2026, 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Location: Strasser Legacy Room, 220 Eggers

In this closing event of her mini residency as Spring 2026 J.K. Watson Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Humanities, Linda Infante Lyons is joined by distinguished panelists Sven Haakanson, Jr. (University of Washington) and Anna Kerttula de Echave (former Program Director, National Science Foundation Arctic Social Sciences). This conversation reflects on Infante Lyons’ residency at Syracuse University and offers a rich dialogue on the intersections of art, heritage, and Indigenous knowledge across the North.

Panelists will explore the possibilities and challenges of artmaking and creativity in Arctic and sub-Arctic contexts, particularly in a time of environmental change and social upheaval. Attendees will gain insight into how contemporary Indigenous artists and scholars navigate creative practice, cultural preservation, and community engagement in these regions.

This session provides a rare opportunity to hear directly from artists and scholars working at the forefront of Indigenous art and cultural research, and to consider how artistic practice can illuminate, respond to, and shape the evolving landscapes and communities of the North.
