Creativity in Translation

Time: March 26, 2026, 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Location: (location T.B.D.)

Part of the Syracuse Symposium series.
The public event features a bilingual reading from the original Arabic novel سفر الاختفاء and its English translation as The Book of Disappearance (longlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2025) by author Ibtisam Azem and translator Sinan Antoon. SU faculty member Sevinç Türkkan, a finalist for a PEN award for her translation of The Stone Building and Other Places by Aslı Erdoğan, facilitates a conversation with Azem and Antoon about creativity, collaboration, meaning negotiation, and publishing world literature in translation.
Earlier in the day, Türkkan (Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition) connects students to these topics in a workshop on the creative challenges of translation and the practicalities of managing copyright and finding a publisher.
