Engaged Humanities Brown Bag Series: Group Discussion
Time: April 1, 2022, noon - 1 p.m.
Location: 304 Tolley Humanities Building

Sponsored by the CNY Humanities Corridor
The Engaged Humanities Brown Bag Series is a student-led discussion group that centers conversations around community engaged work of all kinds. The group’s mission is to create an informal space for graduate students and community partners across Syracuse University, the city, and the region to share ideas, struggles, resources, and projects at all levels of development. Some of the biggest challenges of doing community work are knowing where and how to start. Our monthly meetings will disentangle some of the complexities of what it means to do work in and with communities.
This group welcomes both new and established members of the University and surrounding communities as we hope to build a network of intersectional awareness, mutual aid, and collective problem solving. All sessions include a free lunch!
Series Outline
In the first meeting, we will get to know each other. We will discuss on-going projects and opportunities for new community members to get involved. We will also open the floor for new projects to receive feedback from the group. The group will decide what themes or topics will be discussed in subsequent meetings.
April 1st: Group Led Discussion
Discussion topics of the second meeting will be decided by the group in the first meeting. Organizing in this way will mirror how community work can be done. By understanding the needs and desires of the community first, meaningful collective work can develop around shared needs and desires. This bottom-up workshop design is how we will approach the second meeting.
Friday May 6th: Moving Forward
The last meeting of the semester will look forward to the possibilities for the group. While the group my decide to remain an informal place for discussion, we may also decide to broaden the scope by together targeting a conference panel, publication venue, or seek funding to expand the group’s impact. For this meeting we invite participants to take ownership of how they would like to see the group expand. While community projects will always be centered, this last meeting will explore the future of the group.
