Filmmakers and journalists, Thuvassery and Pande, share their experience of running Khabar Lahariya, the award-winning news platform, India’s singular grassroots journalism outfit comprising women reporters and editors from rural, marginalized communities. They discuss the switch to a digital space; the challenges presented by gender, caste, and class; and highlights of running a feminist grassroots media network for two decades.
A recent Oscar winning film, Words of Fire, focuses on the work of this rural women’s news network. This interdisciplinary conversation is co-hosted by Women's & Gender Studies and CODE^SHIFT at the Newhouse School, centered on the feminist and social justice aspects of digital media in the rural Global South.
