The departments of Nutrition and Food Studies (Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics) and Art and Music Histories (A&S) invite the public to a free performance of classical Indian dance.
Shilpanatanam is a narrative dance form created by Maya Kulkarni. It is rooted in the ancient text, Natyashastra, but goes beyond convention to bring novel themes and stories to the stage.
This moving performance engages aesthetic links between dance, religion, art, and architecture; the modernizing of a traditional dance form in post-Independence India; and the recent re-evaluation of caste politics in its historical trajectory. The group also offers a workshop opportunity on Nov. 8.
