Jim: The James Foley Story
Time: Feb. 19, 2026, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Location: Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium, Newhouse 3

Join Syracuse University alumnus and award-winning documentary director Brian Oakes as he returns to his alma mater for a screening of his HBO film, Jim: The James Foley Story. Following the screening, Oakes share insights about the project in a discussion moderated by film professor Tula Goenka. This event is part of the Newhouse School's 'Silenced' series.
As a graduate of Syracuse University’s communication design program, Oakes brings the perspective of a visual storyteller who knew James Foley as a friend and fellow journalist, not just as a symbol of violence. Oakes will speak about the risks journalists face, the importance of truth‑telling in today’s world, and why protecting a free press matters to all of us. Come hear a compelling personal story and a call to stand with journalists who risk everything to report the news.
Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) will be provided.
