Raag Rang: A Visualization of Indian Classical Music
Time: Nov. 4, 2025, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Location: 114 Bird Library

Part of the Syracuse Symposium series.

Raag Rang means raga (musical mode) of color. A visual element (hue and tone), a material thing (pigment), or a characterization (radiance), color underscores the intimate relationship between music and the musician. What, then, does music look like? Can art express sound?
Academy Award-winning visual effects artist Dipankar Goswamy explores these questions by turning to sound and color in a presentation that explores North Indian classical music through portraits of Indian classical musicians. Selecting ragas that have touched him deeply, Goswamy examines different sonic nuances through the art of visual representation. Memorable music concerts are often defined by a musician who plays or sings the raga. As the raga unfolds, the binaries between music and musician dissolve: the musician becomes the raga and the raga, the artist. Finally, only the music remains. This in-person event is free and open to the public.
