Repairing Syracuse History Through Family Photographs
Archived images of neighborhoods, churches, synagogues and communities tell grassroots stories about place and interconnectedness.

Turning the Lens Collective builds a living digital archive of memorabilia from and about historically overlooked communities. Former and current Humanities Center Dissertation Fellows and HNY Public Humanities project grantees launched inaugural events in Fall 2023 to begin adding Syracuse-area contributions to the long-term social justice project.
Through its partnership with Syracuse University Libraries, the project works with New York Heritage Digital Collections to make this unique, digitized local history available to the public, students and scholars. Additional fiscal and organizational support comes from the Engaged Humanities Network in the College of Arts and Sciences and several of its activities were featured in the Humanities Center's 2023-2024 Syracuse Symposium on "Landscapes."
